Ahhhh spring!  Springtime is when I start planning.  I plan my gardens, visits with friends and new art projects.  If you’re like me you plan to do way more than is possible to accomplish.  But that first warm day of spring gets my creativity going and my energy is boundless.

I hope you have started working on your entries for The Art of Fairhaven Exhibition! We had an outstanding show last year, and I can’t wait to see what you have created for this year’s exhibition. I am really looking forward to the entries for the Visionary Award.  This new award introduced this year is the brain child of member Beth Luey.  The Visionary Award is given to the person that envisions the best use for a much loved but forgotten part of Fairhaven’s past. This year we ask how you would re-imagine the Rogers and Oxford schools.
Speaking of boundless energy, three of our very talented members have put together a fantastic show coming in June.  Bernadette Costa, Jim Mahaney and Robert Smith will present their show:
“3 Photographers = 3 Perspectives”.  I have had a preview of this show and it is not to be missed!    We also have some great classes for kids and kids at heart during April school vacation week.  These classes will sell out fast so sign up early.   Need to rejuvinate after this long winter?  Come on in for our 2nd annual Spring Zing! day of beauty.  Need a night out?  Try a Paint’n'Pour class.
With all this talk of creativity, I think I will go paint something!

The Art of Fairhaven; Past, Present and Future
The Art of Fairhaven; Past, Present and Future is a great way to present your art to the community. You may create in any medium. Whether you choose to show us how you would interpret Fairhaven’s rich historic past, the town as it is today or how you would see Fairhaven in the future is up to you! There are 3 award categories; People’s Choice, Best over 18 and Best under 18. There is also a new award this year, the Visionary award. Going forward, every year our committee will be selecting a location in Fairhaven that had once been a vital part of the town, but has since been forgotten. This year the committee has chosen the Oxford and Rogers schools. Show us how you would like to see these wonderful spaces utilized in the community. There will be an opening exhibition on April 19. The work will be on display through the month of May. You may present your artwork for sale, however it is not necessary. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Suminagashi Workshop for kidsSuminagashi is the ancient Japanese technique of painting on water to create marbleized effects on paper. Literally, it means “ink-floating”, which is in reference to the Sumi-e inks that were originally used in the technique. The patterns are the result of color floated on either plain water or a viscous solution, and then carefully transferred to an absorbent surface, such as paper or fabric. Use the finished print to make cards, journal covers, backgrounds for collage, drawing or further print making projects. When: Wednesday April 16th 3-5pmAge Group: 7-12       Cost: $22

Pastel Classes

Pastels have a depth and richness to them that is unique to this medium. In this beginners class students will experiment with different pastel papers and types of pastels while applying principals of color, value and design. We concentrate on the colors of each object and where they are in relation to each other. Before any detail is added, the artwork is filled with life and drama simply by applying color. As the shadows and lines bring the artwork into focus, each artist is encouraged to find their own rhythm and style. They will learn techniques for working in pastels that will make their subjects come to life as their skills progress.

Class schedule:

  • Wednesday April 9, 2014 2:30-5:30 pm
  • Thursday April 24, 2014 6-8:30 pm
